Moving an existing WordPress site to Twerple

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • WordPress

Bring a WordPress site from another host, with our free migration or step by step yourself.

The easy way: we do it for you

Website migration is free with our hosting plans. Open a support ticket from your client area with your website's address and, if you can, access to your old hosting. Our team moves the files, database and email, and tells you when it is time to point your domain to us.

Doing it yourself

  1. Export from your old host: download all of your WordPress files (everything in the folder that contains wp-config.php) and export the database as a .sql file. A migration plugin can also produce both in one archive.
  2. Add your domain to your Twerple account if it is not there yet. See Adding another domain.
  3. Upload the files into the domain's public_html folder. See Uploading your website.
  4. Create a database and import your .sql file. See Creating a MySQL database and Importing a database.
  5. Update wp-config.php with the new database name, user and password, and localhost as the host.
  6. Add the site to the WP Toolkit: go to WP Toolkit → Install WordPress, choose Import Existing and pick the domain. The toolkit finds your site so you can manage it like any other.
  7. Fix permissions: in WP Toolkit → WordPress Sites, select the site and click Fix Permissions.
  8. Check the site with the preview link or hosts file.
  9. Point your domain to Twerple, then issue your free SSL certificate.

Keep your old hosting until the domain has fully switched over, usually a day or two.
