What a WHOIS record tells you
Useful whether you are checking a domain you would like to buy, investigating a suspicious website, or confirming that your own details are correct.
When It Expires
See the expiry date of a domain you are interested in, so you know when it might become available or when to approach the owner with an offer.
Whether the Owner Is Public
Find out if the registrant’s contact details are published or hidden behind WHOIS privacy, and check that your own domains are protected.
Where It Is Hosted
The nameservers reveal which DNS or hosting provider is serving the domain, which is usually the first step when troubleshooting a website.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the WHOIS database?
WHOIS is the public directory of domain registrations. For every domain it records the registrar, the registration and expiry dates, the nameservers and, unless privacy protection is on, the owner’s contact details. Each registry publishes the records for its own extensions.
Why are some contact details hidden in WHOIS?
Since GDPR came into force, most registrars redact personal details by default, and many offer WHOIS privacy on top. Twerple includes it with every eligible domain, so your name, address and phone number are never published.
