Recovering a deleted or overwritten file

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Files, FTP & SSH

Get back a file you deleted or changed by mistake, from the trash or from a backup.

Deleted in the last 30 days in the File Manager?

Files deleted in the HostPanel File Manager go to the trash and stay there for 30 days. Open the trash in Files → File Manager, select the file and restore it.

Deleted another way, or overwritten?

Files deleted over FTP or SFTP, or by your website itself, do not go to the trash. Restore them from a backup instead:

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Backup → Restore.
  2. Find a backup from before the change and click Browse.
  3. Find the file in the folder tree, or search for it. You can preview it to compare it with the current version.
  4. Restore it, either replacing the current file or as a copy next to it ending in .restored, so you can compare the two.

See Restoring a file, database or mailbox for more detail.

If you cannot find a suitable backup, open a support ticket with the file's location and roughly when it was last correct. We keep daily backups and can restore it for you.
