Using the File Manager

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Files, FTP & SSH

Upload, edit, move, compress and restore files in your browser, with handy keyboard shortcuts.

The File Manager lets you work with your website's files in your browser, without any extra software.

Opening it

Sign in to HostPanel and go to Files → File Manager. You start in your home folder. Your website is in your domain's folder, inside public_html. See Where your website files live.

For quick jobs, the Files tab of your hosting in the client area also lets you browse, upload, edit and delete files.

What you can do

  • Upload: click Upload or drag files onto the page. If a file already exists, you choose whether to replace it.
  • Create: use New Folder, or create a new file.
  • Edit: double-click a text file, such as an HTML, CSS or PHP file, to open it in the code editor. Press Ctrl+S to save.
  • Rename: select an item and press F2. Use Bulk Rename for many files at once.
  • Move and copy: drag items onto a folder, or use cut, copy and paste.
  • Compress: select items and compress them into a ZIP or TAR.GZ file, for example to download a copy of your site.
  • Extract: unpack ZIP, TAR.GZ, TGZ, GZ and TAR.BZ2 archives.
  • Permissions: open the Permissions dialog to change who can read, write and run a file. See File and folder permissions explained.

Deleted something by mistake?

Deleted files go to the trash and can be restored for 30 days. Deleting five or more items at once, or emptying the trash, asks you to type DELETE to confirm.
