Connecting with SSH or SFTP

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Files, FTP & SSH

Encrypted file transfers and command-line access, with SSH keys for password-free sign-in.

SFTP is an encrypted way to transfer files, and SSH gives you a command line on your hosting account. Whether SSH is available depends on your plan.

Finding your connection details

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Tools → SSH Access.
  2. A green banner shows your ready-made command, for example ssh username@203.0.113.10 -p 22, and a card lists the server IP, port, user name and access level. Each value can be copied.

If the banner is red, SSH is not included in your plan. Contact us if you need it.

Two kinds of access

TypeWhat it allows
Jailed (SFTP only)Encrypted file transfer only, limited to your own folders
Full (SSH + SFTP)A command line plus file transfer, still limited to your own files

Connecting with an SFTP program

In FileZilla, WinSCP or Cyberduck, choose the SFTP protocol and enter the IP address, port, user name and password from the SSH Access page.

Signing in with an SSH key

Keys are safer than passwords and save you typing one each time.

  1. On your computer, create a key pair. In a terminal (or Windows PowerShell), run:
    ssh-keygen -t ed25519
  2. Copy the contents of the public key file, which ends in .pub (for example ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub).
  3. In HostPanel, open Tools → SSH Access, go to the SSH Keys tab and paste the public key.

Never share or upload your private key, the file without .pub. The Quick Guide tab has step-by-step instructions for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Useful commands

cd ~/example.com/public_html # go to your website
ls -la # list files
wp plugin list # WordPress command line
composer install # install PHP packages
