Restoring a file, database or mailbox

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Backups & Restores

Bring back one file, one database or one mailbox from a backup without touching anything else.

You do not have to restore a whole backup to get one thing back. You can open a backup, find exactly what you need and restore just that.

Opening a backup

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Backup → Restore.
  2. Find a backup from before the problem and click Browse. The backup opens without being unpacked.

The first time you open an older backup, it may take a moment to prepare. After that, browsing is instant.

Restoring files

  1. Find the file or folder in the tree, or search for it.
  2. Preview it to compare it with the current version: the preview shows whether it is identical, different or missing today.
  3. Restore it. Choose to replace the current file, or to save it next to the current one with .restored at the end, so you can compare the two first.

Restoring a database

Choose the database in the backup and restore it. It replaces the current database with the version from the backup, so anything added since, such as orders or comments, is lost. If in doubt, export the current database first.

Restoring a mailbox

Choose the mailbox in the backup and restore it to bring back deleted messages.

Before any of these restores, a safety copy of the current version is saved automatically, so nothing is lost if you restore the wrong thing.

If you cannot find what you need, open a support ticket with what is missing and roughly when it was last there, and we will restore it for you.
