Restoring your whole account or website

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Backups & Restores

Roll a website back to an earlier day after a hack, a failed update or a big mistake.

A full restore puts a website back exactly as it was on the day of the backup. Use it after a hack, a failed update or a change you cannot undo.

Before you start

  • A full restore replaces the current files, databases and, if you choose, email with the backup's versions. Anything added since the backup, such as new orders, posts or emails, is replaced too.
  • If only one file, database or mailbox is affected, use a granular restore instead.

Restoring

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Backup → Restore.
  2. Find the backup from the right day and click Restore.
  3. Choose what to restore: website files, databases, email, DNS records and SSL. You can untick email, for example, to keep the messages you received since.
  4. HostPanel shows anything that already exists. For each, choose to overwrite it or skip it.
  5. Leave the pre-restore safety backup switched on, so you can go back if you chose the wrong day.
  6. Leave clean restore off unless you want files that were not in the backup deleted, for example files an attacker added.
  7. Start the restore and follow its progress.

After a hack

Restore a backup from before the attack with clean restore on, then immediately change all passwords and update your website software, plugins and themes. Otherwise the same weakness can be used again. See Scanning your website for malware.
