Speeding up your website with the page cache

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Websites, PHP & Performance

Serve pages from a fast cache, and clear it when you update your site.

Every time a visitor opens a page, PHP and the database build it from scratch. The full-page cache saves the finished page and serves the saved copy to the next visitors, which is much faster and uses far fewer resources.

Turning on the full-page cache

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Domains → Domain List.
  2. Click your domain and open the Web Server tab.
  3. Switch on Full-page Cache ("Serve whole pages from Nginx cache"). It takes effect immediately.

This suits websites whose pages look the same for every visitor, such as company sites, blogs and portfolios. For shops, membership sites and pages that show different content to signed-in visitors, use a caching plugin designed for your software instead. For WordPress, the best option is Boost.

Clearing the cache

After you change your website, visitors may still see the old version for a short while. To clear the cache, open the domain in HostPanel and click Clear Cache on its General tab, or right-click the domain in the domain list and choose Clear Cache.

Other quick wins

  • Use the newest PHP version your site supports. See Changing your PHP version.
  • Compress images before uploading them, and use modern formats such as WebP.
  • Remove plugins you do not use.
