Changing PHP settings: memory limit, upload size and more

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Websites, PHP & Performance

Raise the upload size, memory limit or execution time for your website.

Some websites need different PHP settings, for example to upload larger files or run longer imports. You can change them for each domain.

The settings form

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Domains → Domain List.
  2. Click your domain and open the PHP tab.
  3. In Resource Limits, change the values you need and apply the change.
SettingWhat it controls
upload_max_filesizeThe largest single file that can be uploaded
post_max_sizeThe largest form submission; keep it equal to or larger than upload_max_filesize
memory_limitHow much memory one PHP request may use
max_execution_timeHow many seconds a PHP request may run
max_input_varsHow many form fields can be sent at once; raise it for large menus or option pages
max_input_timeHow long PHP may spend receiving a request
max_file_uploadsHow many files can be uploaded in one go

Some limits, such as memory_limit and max_execution_time, are set by your plan and show a plan-limit badge. To go higher, you need a larger plan.

Other settings with .user.ini

For settings not in the form, such as the time zone, use the .user.ini Editor on the same tab, or create a file called .user.ini in your public_html folder:

date.timezone = Europe/London
display_errors = Off

Changes in .user.ini take effect within a few minutes, without a restart. Plan limits cannot be raised this way.
