Using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 with your domain

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Email

Keep your website on Twerple while your email runs on Google or Microsoft.

Many businesses host their website with us and their email with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. This works well: you just point the domain's email records to them.

If your domain uses Twerple's nameservers

  1. Sign up for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 and add your domain there. They will ask you to verify it with a TXT record; add it in Domains → DNS Zones in HostPanel.
  2. Delete the existing MX records in your DNS zone that point to the Twerple mail server.
  3. Add the MX records Google or Microsoft gives you. The usual values are in Common DNS records.
  4. Update your SPF record to include the new provider, for example v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all. Keep only one SPF record.
  5. Set up DKIM in the Google or Microsoft admin console and add the record it gives you.

If your DNS is managed elsewhere

Make the same changes at your DNS provider. Your website keeps working as long as the A records still point to your Twerple server.

Things to know

  • Once the MX records point to Google or Microsoft, email no longer arrives in your Twerple mailboxes. Move any mail you want to keep before you switch, or ask your new provider about their import tools.
  • If your website sends email (contact forms, orders), set it to send through your new provider with SMTP so the messages pass SPF.
  • Changes take a few hours to spread. Mail sent in the meantime may arrive in either place, so keep both working for a day.
