Testing changes on a WordPress staging site

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • WordPress

Make a private copy of your site, try changes safely, and push them live when ready.

A staging site is a private copy of your live site where you can try a new theme, plugin or update without any risk to the real one.

Staging is available to reseller accounts. If you are a hosting customer and want a staging copy, open a support ticket and we will set one up for you.

Creating a staging copy

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to WP Toolkit → Staging.
  2. Choose the site and create a staging copy. Add a note if you like.

The copy gets its own address, its own database and its own files. It is hidden from search engines and cannot touch your live database.

Keeping the copy up to date

Sync from Live copies your live site over the staging copy again: files, database, or both. Use it before starting a new round of changes.

Pushing changes to your live site

  1. Click Push to Live.
  2. Choose what to copy: files, database, or both.
  3. Type PROMOTE to confirm.

A backup of your live site is taken automatically first. Be careful with the database: pushing it replaces your live database, including orders, comments and form entries received since the copy was made. For shops, push files only and redo settings changes by hand.

Removing the copy

Delete Staging removes the staging address, its files and its database.
