Backing up and restoring a WordPress site

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • WordPress

Make a full backup before changes, download it, and roll back if something goes wrong.

Your whole account is backed up every day. A WordPress backup is an extra copy of one site that you control, ideal before updates or big changes.

Creating a backup

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to WP Toolkit → WordPress Backups.
  2. Click Create Backup.
  3. Choose the site and the type: Full (files and database), Files or Database.
  4. Give it a name and a note, such as "before theme change".
  5. Start the backup. It runs in the background; the list updates when it is ready.

Downloading a backup

Use the download action on the backup. You get one .tar.gz file containing your files and database, which you can keep on your computer.

Restoring

  1. Use restore on the backup.
  2. Choose what to restore: files, database or both.
  3. Confirm.

Before restoring, the panel automatically saves the current state of the site, so you can undo the restore if you need to. Your wp-config.php is never overwritten.

Backups count towards your disk space. Delete old ones you no longer need.
