Which web server mode to choose for your website, and what .htaccess support means.
Each domain can run in one of two web server modes. You can change it in HostPanel under Domains → Domain List, in the Web Server column or on the domain's Web Server tab.
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Nginx & Apache | Most websites, including WordPress and anything that uses .htaccess files for redirects, pretty links or security rules. Also required for the web application firewall. |
| Nginx Only | Static websites and modern applications that do not use .htaccess. Slightly faster for serving files. |
If you are not sure, choose Nginx & Apache. It is the default, and it works with everything.
Signs you need Nginx and Apache
- Your website has a
.htaccessfile inpublic_html. - Pages other than the home page show "404 Not Found" in Nginx Only mode.
- Your redirects or security rules have stopped working.
Changing the mode
HostPanel asks you to confirm, then reconfigures the website. It takes a few seconds. Check your site afterwards, and switch back if anything looks wrong.
