Managing database users and permissions

1 min read • Updated 2 weeks ago • Databases

Create extra database users, choose what they can do, and lock or delete them.

Each database you create comes with its own user. You only need to create extra users for special cases, for example a reporting tool that should only read data.

Creating a database user

  1. Sign in to HostPanel and go to Databases → Database Users.
  2. Create a new user and enter a user name and password. The password needs 8 or more characters with upper case, lower case and a number.
  3. Leave Host as localhost, which is correct for websites hosted with us.
  4. Choose the databases the user may use.
  5. Choose what the user may do. The templates make this easy:
    • Read Only: can look but not change anything. Good for reporting tools.
    • Read/Write: can add, change and delete data. Right for most websites.
    • Full (No Admin): can also change the database structure. Use for development and when installing software.
  6. Save.

Managing users

  • Change Password sets a new password. Update it in every website or tool that uses this user.
  • Manage Privileges changes what the user can do in each database.
  • Disable blocks the user without deleting it; enable it again at any time.
  • Delete removes the user after you type DELETE to confirm. The data in the database is not affected.
Give each website the least access it needs. A website that only shows content rarely needs more than Read/Write on its own database.
